New Haiku

(yes, I don't feel it is true haiku, since the piece is only complete in context of the photos...so maybe it is a haiku-ish poem, rather than a proper haiku)

based on a little photo series I did called "Birds At Dawn" (just posted the series over on my photos)

I thought that might be a nice prompt for some writing...

couldn't quite get it down to a haiku...but here is a kind of poem-sketch or haiku-sketch..
part of my process. I write down some phrases and images and then try to distill it down into a haiku..
haven't been able to do it yet.

sweet soft old stone,
you stand quietly in smooth sand,
you sit there, I awake,
bow,
gratitude and wonder.

Since the troll tried to create the impression that I am dominating the board, I actually looked up the figures. Aside from today's posts in response to the goon, I made 4 posts in September, or about 1 per week.

Looks like that last post by someone other than me was in May.

That may be why the board looks like it is filled with my posts.

But anyone can go through and count the actual posts made and see that, indeed, the post by Kenji, was just a post by a troll, trying to create anger and problems...and was just a series of lies.

Dodge Poetry Festival

Most of us in Jersey know about this festival, but not sure how many folks outside the area know about it.

The Dodge Poetry Festival is really amazing and very worthwhile.

Four days. Prices are very low...like maybe $40 for an entire day!

Performances and workshops by Poet Laureates, nationally recognized poets.

Absolutely wonderful stuff!

It is in West Jersey, about 1 1/2 hours from NYC.

Run only once every two years. This is where Bill Moyers filmed his TV specials on poetry.

Missing Person - Update

Awhile ago, I passed this along...about a Tribe sister who's son Chris has been missing since September.

There is some news! It is the first lead in the case!

"Today a girl working at a gas station in Cortez, CO says' she can positively identify Chris as a boy that has come in several time, most recently with 2-3 day, trying to buy cigarettes..."

Here's hoping that the good folks in law enforcement can take this lead and finally bring Chris home!

Please send out some good vibes and, if you could, pass this info along to anyone you know in Colorado
and especially in the Cortez area.

---Forgive me fluffing my own feathers for a moment! This year I won the annual Head-To-Head Haiku championship at the National Poetry Slam!

--If you don't know what a poetry slam is, it is a semi-absurd competition between poets, judged by members of the audience. Nationals includes about 300 poets from around the world, and about 4,000 people attend. In this particular event, there are three judges who hold up colored flags to determine which poem wins a round. You need at least 17 (and as many as 30) top-notch Haiku to make it to the final round.

It was a fairytale moment, facing the defending champion (Ed Maybre of Columbus, OH), best 9-of-17, I win it in the final round and the crowd goes wild! I've been competing in this event for 13 years, and this was the first time I made it past the first round!!!

---So, the next day after winning the Bout, Stephan (the slammaster of Corpus Cristi, TX) comes up and tells me, "Your title, it is Illigitimate. Because I wasn't in the competition." Friendly trash-talking from someone I admire is always welcome!

---Ha! Perhaps he's right. He often gives excellent critique of my work, and writes some damn fine Haiku of his own.

---But, then, we should consider all the other talented Haiku performers who have risen from the slam family who weren't in the competition, such as Matthew John Connelly, Big Poppa E, Deborah Brown, Buddy Ray McNeice, and so many others.

---Which is not to say there wasn't plenty of talent! Logic (from Michigan) almost took me out. Facing Ed Maybre in the Final Round was like a fairytale ending, and no one would claim that it wasn't a most excellent bout, and very tightly matched. But how AWESOME would it have been if ALL the past champions and contenders had been in the mix?!?

---So I'm trying to make good on a promise to Tazuo Yamaguchi and the slam family of hosting a full-scale Haiku competition. Taz and I are talking to organizers at Harbin Hot Springs about hosting a battle the weekend before IWPS, with the champion being showcased on the IWPS Finals stage. My hope is that it becomes an annual event with a large purse, so all the great "Haikusters" might take a weekend out each year to soak in the springs, drink, and share haiku, just like the ancient masters.

---I will inform everyone on the Haiku tribe if we make good on scheduling the event. Please keep an eye out for it! I would love to see my Tribe friends meet my Slam friends in such a lovely setting, sharing (and battling!) their haiku.
